Vassily Sinaisky ( Russian Васи́лий Серафи́мович Сина́йский; born April 20, 1947 in Abez , Komi Republic ) is a Russian conductor and pianist . He has been chief conductor of the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava since 2020 .

Life

Sinaisky studied conducting with Ilya Alexandrowitsch Mussin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and started his career with Kirill Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1973 he took first place in the Karajan competition in Berlin .

From 1976 to 1989 he held the position of chief conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and from 1991 to 1996 of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time he was first guest conductor in the Netherlands with the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest . He then continued his professional career as music director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia , the former State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR, which had been directed by Evgeny Svetlanov , a position he held until 2002. From 1996 to January 2012 he was the first guest conductor with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra , with whom he also recorded a number of records for Chandos , for example with compositions by Karol Szymanowski , Rodion Shchedrin , Mily Balakirev , Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow and Franz Schreker as well as with one Series of film music by Dmitri Shostakovich . Sinaisky has since held the title of Conductor Emeritus of the orchestra. From January 2007 to the 2010-2011 season he was chief conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra , with which he recorded for Naxos with works by Franz Schmidt . From 2009 to 2010 he was resident conductor at the Bolshoi Theater , before taking over the overall direction of the orchestra in August 2010 as music director and chief conductor. In December 2013, due to irreconcilable differences of opinion with the director of the Bolshoi Theater, Vladimir Urin , he resigned from all his posts in Moscow with immediate effect. Since then he has changed his sphere of activity as a guest conductor with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic , the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg , the Vienna Philharmonic . the Cleveland Orchestra and others.
