Building description

Villa Uferstrasse 20
Portico of Villa Uferstrasse 20
The villa with a new, white painted facade

The two-storey villa was built around 1890. Five steps lead up to the portico , which is supported by eight columns . The building rises on an almost square floor plan on a high base and is equipped with a hipped and slated mansard roof . The facade is kept in a striking red and white color combination.

The front side facing the embankment is designed with three axes, whereby the middle part is very elaborately accentuated as a risalit with a protruding portico on the ground floor and pilasters . On the upper floor, four half-columns support a segmented gable with an oval window that is faced with the roof. Rich stucco details in the forms of the late 18th century are abundant. The profiled walls of the arched windows are decorated with fruit hangings , putti heads or specially designed keystones .

In the mansard roof there are four dormer windows on the south and one dormer on the east and west sides . To the north there are two dormers next to the segment gable.

The rear of the building has three axes on the ground floor, with the central axis protruding strongly through a porch with arched windows. The upper floor has four axes, the two middle axes are combined. The designs of the facade on the back are simpler than on the front.

history

At the time of National Socialism , the villa was used by the SA . This may also have been a reason that the villa was still preserved in its current condition and was not destroyed in the air raids on Barmen and the subsequent fires. It was reported that the fire brigade gave priority to this structure when fighting the fire.

After the Second World War, the villa served as an infirmary for the riot police.

The villa was entered as an architectural monument on January 4, 1985 in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

A lawyer's office has been located in the building since 1997.

On the Open Monument Day 2010, the visitors showed great interest in the building.

In 2012 the facade was repainted, the villa now appears in a uniform white.
