Uldis Bērziņš (born May 17, 1944 in Riga ) is a Latvian poet and translator.

Life

Bērziņš studied Latvian Philology at the University of Latvia and published his first collection of poems in 1980. He then studied Turkish at the Department of Oriental Studies at Leningrad University (from 1968 to 1971), and also at the Department of African Studies at the State University Moscow (he focused on Persian and Turkish ), at the State University of Tashkent ( Uzbek language ), University of Iceland ( Icelandic ), as well as in Czechoslovakia and Sweden , among others .

He translates from Polish , Russian , Old Norse , Turkish , Turkmen , Persian , Old Hebrew , Arabic ; He also knows Iwrit , the Tatar and Chuvash languages .

Bērziņš participated in the seminar on Bible translations at the University of Amsterdam and in the forum on Koran translations arranged by Lund University . Since 2002 he has been teaching the Turkish language at the University of Latvia . He has also been an active politician in the Latvian Social Democratic Party since the 1990s .
