The Montalban range

The series begins with The Bastard of Tolosa , the story of a returnees and a veteran of the First Crusade, who awaits bad things again in his southern French homeland before he can finally end his warrior life. This novel from medieval southern France was followed by two more, The Comtessa , about Ermengarde of Narbonne , and The Whore of Babylon , an adventure during the Second Crusade. Although independent stories, they can be summarized in a cycle of novels, because they tell not only important historical events but also the further fortunes of the Provencal family Montalban.
