Ulla Bonas (born December 12, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German geneticist and professor of molecular plant genetics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

Life and accomplishments

Bonas studied biology at the University of Cologne from 1974 (diploma 1981). She then worked as a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research there . Bonas received his doctorate in 1984 with a dissertation on in vitro cloning of a transposable element in the gene for the chalcone synthase of Antirrhinum majus . After receiving her doctorate she received postdoctoral - Fellowships : 1984/85 of the Max Planck Society , 1985/86 and 1986/87 by the DAAD by the DFG . During this time she did research at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1988 to 1993 Bonas headed a working group at the Institute for Genetic Research GmbH in Berlin. 1992 habilitierte it with a work on the molecular genetic analysis of the interaction between Xanthomonas campestris pv. Vesicatoria and the plant . In 1993/94 she received a Heisenberg grant . From 1993 to 1998 Bonas headed a working group at the CNRS Institute des Sciences Végétales in Gif-sur-Yvette , France. In 1998 she accepted a professorship for plant genetics at the Martin Luther University in Halle.

Her main research interests are protein transport systems, bacterial pathogens , type III effector proteins , signal transmission and sRNAs in Xanthomonas . Bonas has been a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) since 2000 and of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2008 . Since 2005 she has been the spokesperson for the Collaborative Research Center 648.
