Ulrich Berkes
Ulrich Berkes (born May 11, 1936 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German writer .
life and work
Ulrich Berkes initially worked as a lathe operator and milling cutter, later as a teacher. From 1967 to 1970 he studied at the Leipzig Institute for Literature . In 1976 he published the volume of poetry Icarus over the city . Some prose poems in this volume make reference to homosexual subjects. Another volume of poetry followed in 1984 with Tandem .
His best known work is Eine schlimme Liebe (1987). The diary contains the author's diary notes, in which he describes his relationship with his partner and his everyday life in an unusually direct manner for the GDR in the mid-1980s. Not only does the title refer to Die Gesänge des Maldoror des Comte de Lautréamont , but also contrasts his experiences directly with the work and life of Lautréamont.
In 1997 he published a collection of poems , again under the title Icarus over the city (though not identical to his first book). In addition, he worked as an editor and published texts in anthologies.
As a lecturer at the poetry seminars taking place in the GDR, Berkes was groundbreaking for some poets, including Thomas Böhme and Dieter Kalka .
