Ulrich Engel (born November 20, 1928 in Stuttgart ; † May 22, 2020 ) was a German philologist and philologist .

After graduating from high school in 1948, Ulrich Engel studied in Tübingen and temporarily in Göttingen. He received his doctorate in 1955 from the University of Tübingen with the thesis dialect and colloquial language in Württemberg .

Since the mid-1960s he was one of the first employees of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim, its director from 1970 to 1977.

He was also an honorary professor for German studies at the University of Bonn . The main areas of teaching and research were German grammar and the creation of a new grammatical theory, such as its classification of verbs . He was visiting universities around the world as a visiting professor.
