Ulrich Föhse (born January 1, 1944 in Wuppertal ; † April 12, 2012 ibid.) Was a German historian , headmaster and city councilor .

Life

In the city council elections in Wuppertal on November 9, 1969, Föhse obtained a seat for the CDU in the city council. He was re-elected in 1975, 1979, 1984 and 1989.

Since the early 1980s he has amassed an important collection of hundreds of letters, photos and other documents that were entrusted to him by former Jewish citizens or their families who or their relatives were expelled from Wuppertal during the National Socialist era.

His widow Adelheid Föhse bequeathed this collection to the Old Synagogue Meeting Center in 2013 , where it is being evaluated with the aim of making it at least partially accessible to the public. A first publication appeared in 2018.

Föhse initiated this collection by writing to hundreds of former Jewish residents of Wuppertal all over the world and asking for more detailed information and documents. Through further correspondence and visits, closer personal relationships gradually developed from many of these contacts.

In addition to building up the collection, Föhse took the first steps in important publications towards an academic analysis of the Jewish history of Wuppertal in the 20th century.

Föhse has received various awards for his work, including the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.
