Ulrich Kunath

Ulrich Wolfram Kunath (born November 1, 1942 ) is a former German surgeon and pioneer in minimally invasive surgery . He also works as a writer.

Life

After studying medicine in Tübingen , Düsseldorf and Hamburg (1962–1968), Kunath took his state examination in Hamburg. He then completed the time as a medical assistant. In 1970 he received his license to practice medicine . He received his advanced training in surgery at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital (R. Amgwerd, BG Weber) and at the Frankfurt University Surgical Clinic (F. Stelzner). He became a specialist in surgery in December 1975 in Frankfurt.

Kunath also received his habilitation in Frankfurt in June 1977, and the re- habilitation took place in Bonn in January 1978.

In 1977 he became senior physician and in 1980 deputy director of the University Hospital Bonn (F. Stelzner). In 1980 he became an adjunct professor and in 1982 a C3 professorship in Bonn.

In 1986 he moved to the Clinic for General, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Saarbrücken City Clinics, where he became chief physician. In 1991 he worked in the same position at the surgical clinic in the Am Urban Clinic in Berlin. He has been working as a private doctor since 1998 (Medical Director Meoclinic Berlin, Lead Surgeon EuromedClinic Fürth). In Tanzania he worked as a surgeon until 2003. In addition, Kunath was an expert at the arbitration board for questions about medical liability in Hanover.

Since retiring from professional life in 2007, Kunath has devoted himself to his writing. He mostly self-publishes novels.

  • Esophagus surgery, colorectal surgery and proctology , minimally invasive surgery since January 1990
  • In 1978, Kunath was the first in Germany to successfully perform blunt dissection of the esophagus (removal without opening the chest) in numerous cases, and in 1998 using a minimally invasive technique. He was also the first in Germany in 1994 to perform laparoscopic gastric banding ( gastric banding in pathological obesity) and in 1993 thoracoscopic myotomy in achalasia .
