Ulrich Lüke

Ulrich Lüke (born September 9, 1951 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German theologian and biologist , priest and pastor. From 2001 to 2017 he was Professor of Systematic Theology at RWTH Aachen University . In his research he deals in particular with the relationship between science and faith.

Life

Lüke studied philosophy, theology and biology in Münster and Regensburg before he was ordained a priest on May 23, 1980. From 1980 to 1992 he worked as a teacher and senior teacher at the Petrinum grammar school in Recklinghausen, where he taught the subjects of biology and religion. In 1990 he did his doctorate with Johann Baptist Metz . Between 1992 and 1998 he worked as a pastor in the parish of Greven-Gimbte in the Münsterland. He completed his habilitation in 1996 and became a private lecturer at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. From 1998 to 1999 Lüke was Professor of Philosophy and Fundamental Theology at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Freiburg . He then became professor for the history of philosophy and theological propaedeutics at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn , before he was appointed professor for systematic theology and director of the Institute for Catholic Theology at RWTH Aachen University in 2001.

Lüke's interdisciplinary research touches on topics of evolutionary biology and hominization in biology , while in theology he touches on areas of the specialist disciplines anthropology , fundamental theology , moral theology , epistemology , soteriology , liturgy and creationism .

Lüke said of the new findings of brain research in relation to a belief in God:

"Experiments in brain research in search of God are about as useful as dismantling a television set in search of Ulrich Wickert ."
