Ulrich Ott (Librarian)

Ulrich Ott (born October 8, 1939 in Essingen ) is a German philologist and librarian . From 1985 to 2004 he headed the German Literature Archive in Marbach and the Schiller National Museum .

Life

Ott studied classical philology, philosophy and German at the universities of Tübingen , Vienna and Berlin. He was in Tübingen with a dissertation on the Pastoral Poems of 1965 Theocritus doctorate . He then worked as a research assistant and, among other things, contributed to the cataloging of the estate and the edition of the works of Rudolf Borchardt . From 1968 to 1970 he was a research assistant at the Philological Department of the University of Tübingen. From 1970 to 1972 Ott completed his training for higher library service at the University Library of Tübingen and at the Librarian Training Institute in Cologne. He then worked at the university library of the Technical University of Hanover, moved to the university library in Konstanz in 1976 and in 1980 took over the management of the university library in Trier. In 1985 he was appointed director of the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive as the successor to Bernhard Zeller . Numerous construction work and the introduction of electronic data processing took place during his tenure. In addition, important legacies and manuscripts were acquired for the literary archive, including the 1988 manuscript of Kafka's novel The Trial . 1997 Ott was awarded the title of professor. Until his retirement in October 2004 he was also the managing director of the German Schiller Society .

In 2004 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . From 1996 to 2020 he was a board member of the ADAMAS Foundation Götz Hübner.
