The artistic work of Ulrich Rölfing is diverse and consists of sculpture , painting , drawing and graphics . For Rölfing, the decision for figurative or abstract work is not a programmatic, but a pragmatic one, the figurative cannot be detached from the formal structure, as it is given in the color and design. Characteristic for his way of working is the emergence of human forms from a free geometry . Since 2006, portrait series have been another focus. In them he dealt with groups as diverse as old farmers (2011), homeless people (2006–2009), religious (2013) and refugees (2018). His diverse exhibition activities began early, in 1978 he showed his first works in the Xantener Galerie 4178. After his stay with Raimondo Puccinelli, drawings, etchings and oil paintings were shown in Wesel in 1981. Rölfing saw himself as a freelance artist while he was still studying art history with Max Imdahl in Bochum. Thematically, his biographical roots, his closeness to nature and his religious imprint play an important role in Rölfing's work; this is exemplified by his exhibition project “Religious Representatives. A portrait project ”, which he carried out in 2015 in the Dreieinigkeitskirche in his adopted home Hamburg-St. Georg realized: "... with the artist Ulrich Rölfing an ideal partner was found for deepening interreligious contacts." During the painting process, the artist approaches the portrayed, Rölfing is a "discovery painter". The places where his works are exhibited are often related to their creation. In addition to traditional exhibition venues such as galleries or museums , this also includes sacred places and public places that are far from art .
