Ulrich Wilhelm Röpke repeatedly finds an ambiguous approach on his mostly large-format canvases by dividing his imagery into a macro and a microscopic one. In the macroscopic world of images, silhouette-like, deformed creatures and landscape fragments cavort in an image space defined with only a sparse backdrop and a few props, but in an image space that is all the more strongly moved by pulsating color tones and nervous brushstrokes. The figure bodies on the picture carriers arise from the force of hurled masses and piles of paint, which compete with one another and stand on top of one another in a crowd on the surface of the canvas.

From a close-up and from a microscopic point of view, the masses of paint on the canvas appear to be constantly in flux, heavily loaded with materials: the paint (apparently) does not dry. In detail, bizarre, abstract landscapes of a microcosm of filigree (nerve and muscle) color fibers are piled up, which seem to be in constant motion, a microcosm that the viewer wants to explore and find.

Contrary to all reference to figuration, which distinguishes the works from a distance, they unfold an imponderable depth in detail, even something abysmal, perishable, dirty, stubborn, which is otherwise only inherent in living organisms. The microcosm inherent in the pictures reports on the growth and decay and the metamorphosis of all living beings.

Nothing is really permanent in the pictures, everything can be changed. Figuration can turn into abstraction at any time and vice versa, you cannot even rely on the drying process and thus on possible conservation.
