Life

Oltmanns made an apprenticeship as a painter from 1920 to 1923. In 1924 he moved to the artists' colony of Mittel-Schreiberhau in the Giant Mountains, where he helped his older brother Olly out in his antique shop. In 1928/29 he went to Berlin to study, but lived in Schreiberhau again from 1930. There he joined the St. Lukas artists 'association founded in 1922 and became a member of the Silesian Artists' Association . During this time the museums in Breslau and Görlitz acquired pictures from him. In 1937 he was banned from exhibiting by the National Socialists. After his draft in 1942, the Oltmanns fought on various fronts in Russia and did not return from captivity in Belgium until 1947. After losing his studio in Schreiberhau, he took up residence in Delmenhorst. In 1948 he became a member of the Künstlergilde e. V. Esslingen, the Neue Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft and the BBK “Junge Gruppe Oldenburg”.

In the post-war period, Oltmanns initially mainly produced designs for “Art in Architecture”. Every year since 1951 he took part in the Great Art Exhibition in Munich. His work during this period was strongly influenced by Max Beckmann. From 1953 to 1967 he also worked as a teacher at the Delmenhorst Adult Education Center. In later years, the Oltmanns undertook many extensive trips in Europe. In 1978 he suffered a heart attack. Oltmanns died on January 3, 1979 in Delmenhorst.
