Professional background

Ulrike Holzgrabe studied chemistry and pharmacy in Marburg and Kiel from 1974 to 1982. In 1983 she did her doctorate at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel with a thesis on "Investigations on the conformation and configuration of heterocyclic bicyclo [3.3.1] nonanones and their reduction products". Also in Kiel in 1989 she completed her habilitation in pharmaceutical chemistry with a thesis on "Oxidative cyclization of ß-aminoketones with cerium (IV) sulfate to 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroisoquinolines ". From 1990 to 1999 she held a C3 professorship at the Rheinische Friedrichs-Universität Bonn . During her time in Bonn, she also took on visiting professorships in Erlangen and Illinois (1995). From 1997 to 1999 she was also Vice Rector for Teaching, Studies and Study Reform.

After she had rejected calls for a C4 professorship at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 1998, she accepted the call at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, where she has held the chair for pharmaceutical chemistry since 1999 Institute for Pharmacy and Food Chemistry. In 2004 she received an offer from the Free University of Berlin , which she refused, as did the offer to become President of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

In addition to her chair, she took on the position of dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy from 2009 to 2011 . Since October 2018, she has been part of the university management in Würzburg as Vice President , where she primarily focuses on the areas of "teacher training" and "studies and teaching".

Scientific focus and activities

The main research areas of Holzgrabe include the development of new anti-infectives , the development of selective ligands for muscarinic receptors , as well as the bioanalytics and analysis of drugs using capillary electrophoresis and NMR spectroscopy . More recently she has appeared repeatedly as an expert in connection with the nitrosamine impurities in the blood pressure lowering drug valsartan , on which she published articles and was also interviewed for television.

In the course of her work, Holzgrabe has published a large number of scientific papers and was also the co-editor of several books.
