Ulrike Schanko (born December 21, 1955 in Bochum ) is a German theater director, dramaturge, translator and author.

Ulrike Schanko initially got involved in youth work and passed the Abitur in 1974 at the Theodor-Körner-Schule (Bochum) . She then studied Romance studies, English studies, journalism and communication science at the Ruhr University from 1974 to 1981 and completed her studies with the examination for the Magister Artium. Topic of the master's thesis: "Cyclical structures in selected novels of the Rougon-Macquart series by Emile Zola".

She began her theater career in 1982 with a dramaturgy internship and an assistant director at the Rheinisches Landestheater Neuss , before she took on her first engagement as a dramaturgy assistant in 1983, then from 1985 as a drama dramaturg at the Münster City Theaters to General Director Karl Wesseler . Here she was soon active for all genres of art, also organized the annual national youth theater competition “Do the theater” and participated in the organization of the 5th NRW Theatertreffen in 1986.

In 1989 Ulrike Schanko moved to the Nuremberg Municipal Theaters as a dramaturge for all genres and as director of the children's and youth theater, where she initially worked under the general director of Burkhard Mauer and subsequently under general director Lew Bogdan. There she was again involved in the organization of the 9th Bavarian Theater Days in 1991.

In 1992, Ulrike Schanko became dramaturge and director of the children's and youth theater under the management of Burkhard Mauer, and one year later chief dramaturge at the Rheinisches Landestheater in Neuss. From 2004 to 2009 the director of this stage, in 2005 she founded the general audition of the German drama schools in North Rhine-Westphalia in cooperation with the central stage agency of the Federal Employment Agency. Before that, she was again significantly involved in the planning and implementation of both the 21st NRW Theatertreffen 2002 and the 19th NRW Children's and Youth Theater Meeting in 2003, where she was a member of the selection juries. During her years in Neuss, Ulrike Schanko was also a member of the juries of the Zonser Hörspielpreis, which is awarded for oral arthearing, and the Krimi-Preis of the Neuss-Grevenbroicher Zeitung and the Emons Verlag in Cologne.

From 2009 Ulrike Schanko worked as a freelance, including until 2014 as a dramaturgical assistant for the Neersen Castle Festival in the city of Willich under the direction of Astrid Jacob .

Schanko has also emerged as a playwright. Her plays, including translations, dramatizations and arrangements, have been published by the Munich theater publishers Kurt Desch, Drei Masken and MTT and have been presented to theaters in Ansbach, Berlin, Bochum (Schauspielhaus), Coburg, Halberstadt, Karlsruhe (Staatstheater), Neersen (Schlossfestspiele). and Paderborn as well as in Neuss.

In May 2011 she published "Who turns around or laughs ...", a play about repressive home education in the GDR, which premiered in the Torgau memorial and was awarded in the nationwide competition "Active for Democracy and Tolerance 2011".

Since September 1, 2011, Ulrike Schanko has been the director of the theater of the city of Itzehoe with a service contract that has been extended until August 31, 2021. In the summer of 2013 she was a member of the artistic director selection commission of the Burghofbühne State Theater in the Wesel district and is also a member of the jury for the Kathrin Türks Prize for 2014 and 2016 , which is awarded every two years to authors of German-language youth theater pieces.
