Ulrike Weckel (* 1961 in Hamburg ) is a German historian and university professor ; since 2013 she has been professor for journalism history and history in media and public at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

Life

Ulrike Weckel studied history, German and educational science at the University of Hamburg from 1981 to 1987 . From 1988 to 1996 she worked as a research assistant. In 1996 she received her doctorate from the University of Hamburg. In 2008 , Weckel completed his habilitation with the work Beschämende Bilder. German reactions to allied documentary films about liberated concentration camps at the Technical University of Berlin . In 2012 she took over the chair for German history in the 20th century with a focus on National Socialism at the Humboldt University in Berlin , in April 2013 she became professor for specialized journalism history and history in the media and public at the University of Gießen.

Research and Teaching

Ulrike Weckel's research focuses on media history, reception research, the gender history of the Enlightenment , the history of sociability, as well as National Socialism and its aftermath. She is co-editor of the anthology "Bestien" and "Kommandempfänger", women and men in Nazi trials after 1945 .

Awards

In 2008, Ulrike Weckel was awarded the Franz Steiner Prize for German-American Studies for her post- doctoral thesis, Shameful Pictures: German Reactions to Allied Documentaries on Liberated Concentration Camps (Transatlantic Historical Studies) . In 2012 she received the Carl Erdmann Prize of the Association of Historians in Germany for outstanding post-doctoral qualifications.
