The Umtanum Ridge is a long anticlinal ridge in counties Yakima and Kittitas in the State of Washington . It runs about 55 mi (89 km) east-southeast of the Cascade Range , through the Yakima Research Station to the banks of the Columbia River at Priest Rapids Dam and Hanford Reach . The eastern end of the Umtanum Ridge enters the Hanford Reach National Monument and the Hanford Site . The Umtanum Ridge runs parallel to the Manastash Ridge in the north and the Yakima Ridge in the south. The Yakima River cuts the ridge at the Umtanum Ridge Water Gap .
The Umtanum Ridge is part of the Yakima Fold Belt , a series of east-facing long ridges formed by the folding of the Columbia River Basalt Group in the Miocene .
