Ukraine's Independence Monument on Maidan Nezalezhnosti

The Independence Monument of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Монумент Незалежності ) is a monument dedicated to the independence of Ukraine on the Majdan Nezaleschnosti in Kiev .

Construction and meaning

The column-shaped monument erected in 2001 on the 10th anniversary of Ukraine's independence on the site of the monument to the Great October Socialist Revolution , which was demolished in 1991, is stylistically a mixture of Ukrainian Baroque and Empire . It is, along with the surrounding square, one of the greatest attractions in the city of Kiev and Ukraine.

The height of the monument is a total of 63 meters, of which 38 meters are accounted for by the white Corinthian column clad with Italian marble . The column has a diameter of 2.2 meters and stands on a 10.8 × 10.8 meter triumphal arch base made of white Canadian granite. It is crowned by a 6 meter high statue that stands on a globe.

To protect the monument from natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes, a 500 kg pendulum absorber was installed to dampen any vibrations.

statue

The statue is a partially gilded cast bronze sculpture weighing about 20 tons and has a rich symbolism : the female figure represents a Berehynja ( Берегиня , female figure of Slavic mythology ) in Ukrainian costume , over which a Kalyna branch (Калина, also a symbol of Ukraine) holding her head.

The model for the female figure was the daughter of the sculptor of the monument Anatolij Kushch, the artist Chrystyna Katrakis. Anatolij Kushch was also the sculptor of the fountain of the city's founders and the bronze sculpture of the Archangel Michael on the Ljadski Gate , both of which are also on the Maidan.

Location

The Independence Monument was erected in the city center in place of the monumental monument of the Great October Socialist Revolution , which was removed after the collapse of the Soviet Union , on the 70 m diameter, southern Majdan Nesaleschnosti , the central square of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
