The loggerhead Bonito ( Auxis thazard even frigate ) is in all oceans living nature of the genus Auxis in the family of mackerel and tuna (Scombridae).

features

The fish have the typical spindle-shaped shape of all mackerel fish. The first dorsal fin has ten to twelve hard rays , the second ten to 13 soft rays. The anal fin has no hard ray and 10 to 14 soft rays. Between the dorsal and anal fin and the caudal fin are the small rafts typical of tuna relatives. The loggerhead bonito becomes a maximum of 65 centimeters long.

Its upper side is dark blue with narrow, irregular, vertical stripes above the lateral line organ . The underside is light.

Loggerhead bonitos eat smaller fish, squids and planktonic crustaceans .

The meat is dark and is considered less valuable than that of the real bonito . However, loggerhead bonitos are also of great importance for fishing because of their frequency . The meat is marketed fresh, smoked, dried or canned.
