The Accident Investigation Center Railways and Ships (UUS) investigated accidents and dangerous events on the railways , bus services and licensed shipping in Switzerland . The UUS was an authority of the Swiss Confederation and was commissioned with its investigations to prevent accidents and dangerous situations.

Before the rail reform , the state company SBB investigated the accidents in its area itself. With the opening of the Swiss railway network to private railway companies , the UUS was created, an investigation body independent of the supervisory authority, the Federal Office of Transport . The UUS started its activities on October 1st, 2000.

The investigative body works independently but coordinates with the cantonal police and judicial authorities . Their investigation reports provided an overview of the accident situation on the Swiss railways for the first time. The USS revealed that there were more incidents than previously suspected. The open documentation contributed a lot to accident prevention at the transport companies.

On November 1, 2011, the Rail and Ships Accident Investigation Board merged with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (BFU) to form the Swiss Accident Investigation Board (SUST).
