history

The Club Deportivo Unión La Calera was founded on January 26, 1954 in La Calera , a town with about 50,000 inhabitants in the Región de Valparaíso in central Chile . Initially, the newly founded club played in regional divisions for a few years before being promoted to the Primera División , the top division in Chilean club football, for the first time in 1961 by taking first place in Primera División B. The team stayed there until 1974, before relegating to the second division again. As a result, it took until the early eighties before Unión La Calera made the leap back into the top division. They finished the second division season in 1984 in first place, which resulted in a return to the first class. There the club then failed and had to start again in the Primera División B after only one year.

In the following years Unión La Calera even had problems staying up in the second division and even had to compete in the third highest division at times. From 1996 to 2000 was the longest third division period of the club, which finally ended in 2000. Until today Unión La Calera did not have to relegate to the third division. Instead, the 2010 season returned to the Primera División after 26 years. In the final round of Primera División B they finished second, only behind Deportes Iquique , but before the competitors of Deportes Antofagasta and Curicó Unido , who had to play in the relegation games. After promotion, Unión La Calera managed to establish itself in the Primera División. In the first season back in the top league, the Torneo Apertura 2011, the playoff games for the championship advanced to the semi-finals, where Universidad Católica was only inferior due to the away goals rule. In the years that followed, Unión La Calera managed to establish itself in the upper midfield of the Primera División and over time to become an integral part of this league again.
