Nuova Pallacanestro Gorizia was an Italian basketball club from Gorizia .
history
In 1868 the sports community L'Unione Ginnastica Goriziana was founded in Gorizia, from which a basketball team emerged in 1920. It took 14 more years for this team to become the official basketball section of the sports community in 1934. Under the name Pallacanestro dell 'Unione Ginnastica Goriziana , one therefore initially competed in lower-class basketball leagues. In 1945 the club celebrated its premiere in the top division in Italy, Serie A , which at that time was still divided into regional groups. Although the team never played up and played in the 50s and 60s in the second division, the games were always well attended and basketball was popular in Gorizia.
In the 70s the club played continuously in Serie A, but still did not make the big break. In the 1978/79 season, the team qualified for the European Korać Cup competition , in which it prevailed in the preliminary round against RBC Verviers-Pepinster and moved into the last 16. Gorizia would only have made it to the semi-finals as first in a group of four, but Partizan Belgrade won the group confidently.
With investments in experienced players, such as the US Olympic and NBA champion Tom LaGarde , an attempt was made in the 80s to advance to the top of Italian basketball, but it failed. Rather, the association disappeared in tabular form in the insignificance. In 2007 they only played in the fifth-rate Serie C. Due to massive financial problems, the club broke up in 2010.
In total, Nuova Pallacanestro Gorizia played 27 seasons in Serie A. The best achieved position was a seventh place, in the play-offs they never got beyond the quarter-finals. Gorizia took part in the fight for the Italian basketball cup 13 times. Again, the team never got any further than the top 8.
