United American Lines

The United American Lines ( UAL ) were a US- American shipping company based in New York and operated a transatlantic liner service in close cooperation with the German HAPAG , there was also a transpacific service across the Panama Canal .
history
In 1920 United American Lines was founded by the American William H. Harriman , a member of the Harriman family. The company was a joint venture between the American Ship & Commerce Corporation , a subsidiary of the American-Hawaiian Line (Harriman Group), and the German HAPAG . The shipping company's ships were easy to recognize by a yellow funnel with two narrow blue ribbons.
After the end of the First World War , HAPAG was looking for a partner to be able to gain a foothold in the international shipping business. HAPAG found this partner in the Harriman family, which had just taken over a pair from the stock of delivered German ships and wanted to use them as well. A contract was signed between William H. Harriman and Wilhelm Cuno , CEO of HAPAG , from which both partners should benefit. With the help of the Americans, the Germans were able to resume liner services and they helped them build a transatlantic shipping company - United American Lines.
The transatlantic route ran from New York via Cherbourg / Boulogne - Southampton / Plymouth to Hamburg , but there was also a line to the US Pacific ports. The service ran from New York to San Francisco via the Panama Canal . This liner service was a main route of Harriman's actual shipping company, the American Hawaiian Line .
Most of the ships used were former HAPAG ships. The service developed quite well, but the Americans were quickly outstripped by their German partner, who was able to recover very quickly. In 1926, the UAL ships used on the transatlantic route were sold to HAPAG and this service was discontinued. The transpacific service was still maintained by the other ships and discontinued their sale, as was the United American Lines .
