history

On December 18, 2005, the RDL and an allied rebel group, the Platform for Change, Unity and Democracy , attacked the city of Adré . The attack was repulsed by the Chadian military . On January 19, 2006, Abdelwahit About was arrested by the Sudanese government along with 20 other FUC rebels after conducting a radio interview in which he said not only that he was in Khartoum , but that the FUC also had friendly relations with the Sudanese Government did. On April 12, the rebels from the United Front then drove about 1000 km from their bases near the Sudanese border to the Chadian capital N'Djamena . Their pre-dawn attack on the capital was repulsed by the Chadian army on April 13.

On December 24, 2006, however, the President of Chad, Idriss Deby Itno , and the rebel leader Mahamat Nour Abdelkerim signed a peace accord that ended hostilities between the government and the United Front for Democratic Change. A substantial portion of the forces commanded by Abdelkerim became regularly incorporated into the Chad National Army over the next three months, but remaining rebel factions continued to fight the government. Abdelkerim was included in the government as Minister of Defense in late March 2007.

Serious fighting between elements of the FUC and the government forces took place on October 18, 2007 near Goz-Beïda . The dispute was sparked by the unwillingness of FUC elements to disarm and integrate into the army, as provided for in the peace agreement. Abdelkerim urged these elements to accept incorporation into the army.

Child soldiers

In May 2007, the rebel group United Front for Change had more than 1,000 child soldiers within its ranks. There are ongoing negotiations with the government of Chad to demobilize the child soldiers.
