United we stand, divided we fall
" United We Stand " (Engl .: United we stand, divided we fall ) is a phrase that is used in the English-speaking world and also among the short we United was used. It basically stands for the principle of unity makes you strong .
Early use
The phrase is attributed to Aesop , who found the principle in the fable Four Ox and a Lion and The Bundle of Sticks . used. A similar phrase can be found in the synoptic gospels of the Bible : "And if a house becomes at odds with itself, it cannot stand." ( Mk 3:25 LUT ), or "[...] and any city or house, if it becomes at odds with itself, it cannot stand "( Mt 12,25 LUT ) and" Every kingdom, if it becomes at odds with itself, it becomes desolate; and one house falls over the other ”( Lk 11:17 ESV ).
In modern times, MP John Dickinson used this term in his revolutionary song The Liberty Song . This song was reprinted in the Boston Gazette in July 1768. Here it was said “Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall! ” (Hand in hand, brave Americans join us. We stand united, we fall apart).
State motto
The US state Kentucky has the phrase as its official state motto . On the flag of the US state of Missouri will motto used.
Indian struggle for independence
The motto was used during the Indian campaigns for independence from the British Empire .
Ulster Loyalism
The motto is also used by the pro-British Ulster loyalists in Northern Ireland and can also be seen on the so-called murals (political graffiti).
