The University of Ariel ( Hebrew אוניברסיטת אריאל בשומרון, until 2012: "University Center Ariel in Samaria") is a university in the Israeli settlement Ariel in the Israeli-occupied West Bank .

history

The college was founded in 1982 as an offshoot of the Bar Ilan University . This connection was maintained until the academic year 2004/05 and the university was named " College for Judea and Samaria". The project to upgrade the institution corresponding to an Israeli academic university to a university initially failed because of the state accreditation authority. In early 2011, 145 Israeli academics called for a boycott of the university to protest the expansion of settlement activities. Their petition stated: “Ariel is not part of the territory of Israel. Therefore, we cannot be forced to go there. ”The upgrade has been criticized by various notable Israeli academics and the Council for Higher Education. The local district authority for higher education, however, accepted the change of status. In December 2012, the status was finally officially recognized. The university is also funded by donors such as the Milken family from the United States.

International Relations

The university is a member of the International Association of Universities .

The British Association of University Teachers (AUT) decided in April 2005 to boycott Ariel University and Bar-Ilan University because of their connection to them, but overturned the decision at an extraordinary delegates' meeting convened in early May 2005 because it damages the freedom of science , hinders Israeli-Palestinian peace projects and a unilateral boycott of Israel is unjustifiable.

In 2009, the Spanish Ministry of Construction excluded Ariel University from an international architectural competition for the use of solar energy. The Anti-Defamation League protested against this decision In January 2016 it was published that the Spanish government paid the university the equivalent of around 95,000 euros in compensation to settle a legal dispute.
