Student riots
The University of Buea has attracted attention again and again in recent years due to serious unrest, for example in the summer of 2005, when the student body opposed the nationwide doubling of tuition fees , for an improvement of the infrastructure and for the removal of the then Vice Chancellor of the university. This was repeatedly noticed because it disregarded the rights of students and fought student self-organization . The strike was brutally suppressed by Cameroonian security forces, killing several students and injuring many.
In the course of the opening of the medical faculty, written entrance exams took place in November 2006 , and the lists of accepted applicants were subsequently manipulated by the authorities. The corrupt practices of the Ministry of Higher Education were sharply criticized by the students at the university. Again, the peaceful demonstrations were pushed back by force of arms, killing 11 people, including a taxi driver and an old woman.
