The University of Eastern Finland ( Finnish Itä-Suomen yliopisto ; Swedish Östra Finlands universitet ) was founded in 2010 through a merger of the former universities in Joensuu and Kuopio. The university has a campus in Joensuu , one in Kuopio and a smaller campus in Savonlinna as well as the Mekrijärvi research station in Ilomantsi .

The University of Eastern Finland is one of the most important universities in Finland. Its three locations in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna have a total of 15,000 students and around 2,600 employees.

With four faculties - philosophy, natural and forest sciences, health sciences as well as social and commercial sciences - and more than 100 main subjects, a diverse curriculum is possible.

Particular emphasis is placed on the cooperation between different branches of science. The main research areas are forests and the environment, health and well-being, and new technologies and materials.

The university maintains an extensive network of international relationships and exchange programs for researchers, teachers and students. The number of bilateral cooperation agreements with foreign universities is currently around 100. There are also memberships in a large number of international networks and project communities.

Orthodox theology

Since 1988, the university has been the only way to study Orthodox theology in Finland . The Seminary of the Orthodox Church of Finland is located near the Faculty of Theology .
