The university church

The University Church ( Hungarian: Egyetemi templom ) in the Hungarian capital Budapest , south of Pest in the V district, is considered the most beautiful baroque church in the city. It was built between 1725 and 1742 for the Pauline Order . However, the two towers on either side of the church could not be completed until 1771. The plans for the imposing building on Egyetem tér were penned by the Austrian master builder Andreas Mayerhoffer . It was built on the foundations of a Turkish mosque.

Building

An impressive triangular gable adorns the facade of the church. On it there are depictions of the hermits Paulus von Thebes and Antonius , as well as the coat of arms of the Pauline order . There are also two lions between which a palm tree is depicted. You can also find a raven. Mayerhoffer had a Madonna placed under the gable , which stands on a globe.

The university church is a typical single-nave wall pillar church with closed side chapels . The representations on the barrel vault of the church were designed by Johann Bergl . For his scenes from the life of Mary , he was inspired by Italian baroque paintings. It is interesting how he continues the architecture in his ceiling paintings.

József Hebenstreit is responsible for both the choir stalls and the sculptures on the main altar. The sculptures, which Hebenstreit completed in 1746, are supposed to represent the hermits Paulus and Antonius .

If you look towards the altar , you will find a copy of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa . The year this sculpture was created is estimated to be 1720.

If you leave the church building, you will find yourself in front of the former Pauline monastery. Matthias Drenker was commissioned to build the monastery for the Pauline order in the 18th century. However, since the Pauline Order was dissolved by Joseph II in 1786 , the monastery stood empty from that point on. From 1805 it was used by the theological faculty of the Hungarian University of Budapest .
