University of Yaoundé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Yaoundé , also University of Yaoundé ( English University of Yaoundé , French Université de Yaoundé ) was the largest and leading university in Cameroon . It was dissolved in 1993 and merged with the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II .

history

In October 1961, a first higher education institution called Institut d'études universitaires was founded. Shortly thereafter, on July 26, 1962, the Université Fédérale du Cameroun ( Federal University of Yaoundé ), the first university in Cameroon, was established. It was built with the help of French support. In 1972, as a result of the state restructuring from a federal to a unitary state, the "Fédérale" from the name was dropped and the university took the name Université de Yaoundé . In the 1980s, four local campuses were expanded at the university. In the 1990s the university was overburdened. Designed for 5,000 students, 40,000 students studied there. Some complaints were made about corruption among teaching staff.

In 1993, as part of a university reform, the university was split into two universities. The University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II have existed since then .

The reforms were shaped by liberalization measures. Among other things, tuition fees were introduced . The reforms sparked widespread protest. This lasted from 1990 to 1996 and triggered a wave of violence unprecedented in Cameroonian history. This was also characterized by breaks within the student body that ran along party lines and ethno-regional affiliations.
