University of Nanking
The University of Nanking (also: Nanking University ; Jinling University ; Chinese 金陵 大学 , Pinyin Jīn líng dà xué , W.-G. Chinling Ta-hsue , Jinling = Nanjing ) was a private university in Nanking , China . The university was founded in 1888 and funded by American churches. It was the first educational institution in China to be officially called a "university".
history
The Nanking University (汇 文书 院, Huiwen Shuyuan) was founded in 1888 by CH Fowler . It originally had three faculties: Liberal Arts , Divinity, and Medicine . In 1910, Nanking University merged with The Union Christian College (宏 育 书院, Hongyu Shuyuan) and changed its name to Private University of Nanking (金陵 大学). As such, it was registered with the New York State Education Department .
In 1951 the Ginling College ( Ginling Women University , founded in 1913) was added to the University of Nanking. In 1952 the University of Nanking merged with the University of Nanjing (南京大学).
