Santiago Vila i Vicente (born March 15, 1973 in Granollers ), or Santi Vila for short , is a Catalan historian and politician . He is a member of the Partit Demòcrata Europeu Català (PDeCAT), a liberal party that advocates the independence of Catalonia from Spain.

Political career

Santiago Vila i Vicente graduated from the Universitat de Girona with a degree in history . He obtained his doctorate - summa cum laude - at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona . As a result, he taught at schools and universities. He published on Catholic fundamentalism in Catalonia and was awarded in 2004 for his essay Praise of Remembrance .

In 1999 he was elected to the Figueres City Council. He was originally a member of the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), the Republican Left of Catalonia, but in 2000 he moved to the Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC), today's PDeCAT. In 2006 he was elected Member of the Catalan Parliament and in 2007 Mayor of Figueres. When he was re-elected in 2011, he was the city's first mayor to achieve an absolute majority.

In 2012 he was appointed Conseller de Territori i Sostenibilitat to the Generalitat de Catalunya , in German: Minister for Spatial Planning and Sustainability in the autonomous Catalan regional government. He also built up a network with politicians from other parties, members of the board of the socialist PSOE and prominent representatives of the ruling party Partido Popular (PP) , such as the Speaker of Parliament Ana Pastor Julián and the Minister of Justice Rafael Catalá . His motto is: “Independence from a moderate position.” In 2016 he switched to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and published the political essay Ein Gründungsmoment, Visions of Modern Reformism . In 2017 he was appointed Conseller d'Empresa i Coneixement , Minister for Economy and Science.

Role during the Catalonia crisis

In the context of the Catalonia crisis , he pleaded for dialogue and warned both sides that a hard line would lead to disaster. When the fronts became hardened, he resigned from his position on October 26, the day before the Catalan Parliament declared independence. In his declaration of resignation via Twitter you can read: “My attempts at dialogue have failed once again. I hope I was of use to the President and the Catalans until the last minute. "

After Carles Puigdemont's escape , he posed as his possible successor in a radio interview and announced his intention to run in the regional elections in December 2017. On November 2, 2017, judge Carmen Lamela ordered the arrest of nine members of the Catalan regional government, including Vila i Vicente. Furthermore, arrest warrants were issued the next day against five other members of the government who were in Belgium , including Carles Puigdemont. Vila i Vicente was the only one of the nine former ministers who had followed the summons to Madrid to be able to avoid arrest - on bail of 50,000 euros. However, the politician decided - out of solidarity with his former ministerial colleagues - to spend the night behind bars. The following day bail was made and the politician left Estremera prison . He told the press: "We will not be able to resolve this issue in the courts, but only through political means."

On November 19, 2017, it became known that the deposed Catalan regional government published a photo of "members of the legitimate government" on its website, on which Santi Vila i Vicente had been retouched. However, they forgot to remove their legs and feet afterwards.

On October 14, 2019, he was fined 60,000 euros (ten months with a daily rate of 200 euros) as part of the criminal proceedings as a result of the Catalonia crisis since 2017 for resisting state authority (span: desobediencia ), as well as a 20- sentenced to a month's professional ban for all political positions.

Personal

Santi Vila i Vicente describes itself as religious. He is an avid hiker and bullfighter . In 2010 he was the only one of his party to vote against the ban in Catalonia, against the party line.

On July 5, 2014, the politician married his long-time partner Rafael Vertamatti, a Brazilian chef who he met in Empordà in 2004 . The wedding took place at Castell de Peralada , the ceremony was chaired by Carles Puigdemont , then Mayor of Girona . The separation was announced in early 2016. His current partner is Javier Luque, former manager of Telefónica , who comes from the Basque Country .
