The Lower Drukpa - or Medrug ( Tib. Smad 'brug -Tradition or) Drugpa tradition of Lower Tibet , also known as the Southern School of Drugpa tradition of the Kagyu school ( brug pa bka' brgyud ) of Tibetan Buddhism is called , was founded by Tsangpa Gyares student Gyelwa Lorepa Wangchug Tsondru ( lo ras dbang phyug brtson 'grus ; 1187–1250). Jamyang Gönpo ( 'jam dbyangs mgon po ) was one of his famous students.
Lorepa founded the monastery Karpo Chölung ( dkar po chos lung ) in the valley of the Yarlung River. In his later years he went to Bhutan , where he founded the Tharpaling ( thar pa gling ) monastery in Bumthang ( bum thang ) . A particular transmission of the Lower Drugpa Lineage is known as the five faculties ( thub pa lnga ldan ).
