The Untere Mühle is a historic mill property in Baiertal , a district of Wiesloch in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

history

The first request for the construction of a mill in Baiertal came from a miller from Altwiesloch in 1702 but was not followed up because of the high costs involved. In 1705, the miller Johann Felix, who came from the Grüningen office, started building a mill northeast of the town center at the Gauangelbach, still called Griesbach , with the permission of the Baiertaler condominate and for an annual validity of 5 Malter grain . To operate the mill, a mill channel branching off from the stream was dug. From 1706 Valtin Clemenz completed the construction. He also complained about the high cost. In 1751, Franz Stader became the owner of the mill, followed by Matheus Goos from Bischofsheim in 1763 , whose descendants ran the mill for several generations.

Around 1800, in addition to the mill building and a barn, the gardens in front of and behind the house were also part of the mill. In addition to the validity of 5 Malter grain to the rule, another 2.5 Malter had to be paid to the community. To compensate for the high taxes, the millers were exempt from night watch and compulsory labor.

Matheus Goos' son Caspar also acquired the Obere Mühle, built in 1784, in 1819 . The Goos family ran both mills until around 1870. Caspar Goos' son Ulrich Goos I, miller on the upper mill , was mayor of Baiertal from 1851 to 1861. The lower mill came to the miller Konrad Zahn from Waldwimmersbach through the marriage of a Goos daughter in 1864 . Their son, Karl Hermann Zahn , became a well-known botanist. The mill remained in the possession of the Zahn family until the mill was closed in 1961.

Until 1871 the mill was driven by an undershot water wheel, then by an overshot one. After a fire in 1889, the mill was renewed, and a new lock was built at the same time. In 1950 the community acquired the water rights , after which the mill was converted to electricity . The last miller was Friedrich Zahn, known in Baiertal as Zahne-Fritz , who ceased milling operations in April 1961.
