Karl Hermann Zahn

Karl Hermann Zahn (born December 3, 1865 in Baiertal , † February 8, 1940 in Haigerloch ) was a German botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Zahn ".

Life

Karl Hermann Zahn was born on December 3, 1865, as the child of Konrad Zahn, master miller who works at the Untere Mühle in Baiertal, and his wife Katharina Zahn, née Goos.

Zahn passed the school leaving examination for teachers and then became a sub-teacher at the secondary school in Heidelberg . He studied at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic ; then he worked at the secondary school in Weinheim . Subsequently, he followed the call to the Grand Ducal Badische Baugewerkeschule , later called Staatstechnikum (today Karlsruhe University of Technology - Technology and Economics ), where he stayed for almost 40 years as a lecturer. In 1923, Zahn became professor for descriptive geometry , chemistry and building materials .

In addition to this career, he was already interested in botany when he was 20 years old . His first book Flora der Baar and the adjacent parts of the country was published in 1889; the Baar is a plateau in southwest Germany . Zahn developed into the best expert on the hawkweed plant genus ( Hieracium ). Together with his colleague Hans Woldemar Schack , who also specialized in this genus , he published many works on hawkweeds. Zahn viewed the great Hieracium collections in Berlin, Innsbruck, Vienna, Budapest, Geneva, Zurich and Prague. He made the description of all known species of the genus his life's work.

Zahn completed the work The Hieracies of Central Europe by Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli and Gustav Albert Peter (1853–1937) in decades of work . Between 1921 and 1923, he contributed articles on hawkweeds to booklets 75, 76, 77, 79 and 82 of Adolf Engler's work The Plant Kingdom. Between 1922 and 1938 he wrote about hawkweed in episodes 12 (1) to 12 (3) of the Synopsis of Central European Flora by Paul Friedrich August Ascherson and Karl Otto Robert Peter Paul Graebner . In 1923 he published his own large monograph on the Hieracies .

Zahn married Creszentia Zeiser from Haigerloch in 1894 . After his retirement he lived in Haigerloch, where he died on February 8, 1940.
