The sub unit 3 of the Arp 2/3 complex , shortened p21-ARC or even p21 (because of the molar mass of about 21 kDa), is a structural protein and as such, one of seven subunits of the Arp 2/3 complex . The protein is encoded by the ARPC3 gene on human 12th chromosome .
function
Subunit 3 of the Arp 2/3 complex interacts with the proteins Arp2 , Arp3 , p16 , p20 , p34 and p40 and together with them forms the Arp 2/3 complex, which plays an important role in the formation of actin filaments from G- Actin plays. The complex acts namely as a center for further actin nucleation by an actin dimer mimics the two subunits Arp 2 and 3, but it is more stable than the dimer itself. For activation of the complex, however, "Nucleation promoting factors (NPFs)" still have to bind to four subunits of the complex and to actin. The p21 subunit has such a binding site.
