Unterwassern is a formerly independent municipality in the Swiss canton of Valais . Unterwassern became part of the municipality of Oberwald in 1834 ; this in turn has been part of the newly formed community of Obergoms since January 1st, 2009 . Unterwassern and Oberwald have grown together today and form the last village in Goms .

history

Together with the neighboring towns of Oberwald and Obergesteln , farmers' guilds were formed in Unterwassern in the late Middle Ages. The places together formed the uppermost quarter of Goms . The three villages were destroyed by the Bernese in the Rarn War in 1419 . In this context, the first documented tradition of the place has been preserved.

The village of Unterwassern merged with the neighboring village of Oberwald to form the municipality of Oberwald in 1834. The reason for the merger was the consequences of the devastating flood of 1834, which exceeded the financial resources of the community of Unterwassern. Unterwasser was hit by a flood as early as 1706. The place Oberwald is north of the Rotten , while Unterwassern is south of it.

Unterwassern has never been an independent parish , but always with Oberwald together in the same parish. The Christopherus Chapel of Unterwassern is first mentioned in 1610.
