Unpackaged - loose, sustainable, good is a food retailer in Kiel , Schleswig-Holstein. Founded in February 2014, Unverpackt is the first unpackaged store in Germany. Founder and owner Marie Delaperrière did pioneering work and paved the way for the establishment of more shops.
history
The idea came up in 2012 when company founder Marie Delaperrière was looking for ways to cause as little waste as possible in her own everyday life. She was inspired by the book Zero Waste Home by Béa Johnson , who lives in the USA . After the concept was worked out from 2012 to 2013, the store opened in February 2014, making Unpacked the first store of its kind in Germany. There have already been successful attempts abroad, such as Unpackaged in London.
At the beginning 250 products were offered on a total area of 75 m². After the first move in 2015, there were 500 products on an area of 100 m². Since the last move in October 2017, the range has increased to 800 products, which are preferably sourced regionally and in organic quality.
The transfer of the license made it possible to open further unpackaged stores in Husum, Lübeck and Pforzheim. These stores have adopted the concept and are helping to spread the idea.
concept
Unpacked enables bulk and reusable goods to be purchased in order to avoid packaging waste. Customers bring their own containers with them to purchase the loose range, which they fill independently in the store. The goods are obtained in bulk containers or deposit systems. The concept promotes needs-based shopping, thereby avoiding food waste.
The range includes over 800 products from everyday needs for a garbage-free life. In addition to foods such as cereals, pasta, baking ingredients, legumes, oil seeds, nuts, oils, vinegars, spices, antipasti, tea, coffee, eggs, dairy products, sausage, fruit, vegetables, dried fruits, beverages, sweet and salty, cleaning agents, hygiene products and Accessories for a waste-free life, such as reusable drinking bottles, cans and glasses.
effectiveness
Advice and seminars
Unverpackt has been offering seminars and advice for founders since March 2015, which helps spread the concept. By January 2019, around 250 people had taken advantage of the offer, making up a large proportion of the more than 100 unpackaged stores opened in Germany.
Support for student papers
Since 2014, more than 20 theses have been supervised that deal with the opportunities and challenges of the concept and examine its future viability and transferability - also to other countries. Above all, the topics of social entrepreneurship , circular economy and zero waste were examined and numerous customer concept analyzes were carried out.
Lectures and media attention
Since 2016, Marie Delaperrière has given numerous lectures in which she talks about the unpackaged concept and the zero-waste lifestyle. She is also in demand as an expert in panel discussions in the areas of social entrepreneurship , consumer behavior , plastics , nutrition and education. As the first store of its kind, Unpacked also attracted media attention. In addition to regional magazines and channels, Stern TV, National Geographics and specialist magazines reported on the concept.
Social effectiveness
In addition to purchasing everyday items, unpackaged acts as a multiplier for sustainable consumption patterns. By exchanging ideas with other customers and employees, customers are made aware of environmentally relevant issues and new fields of action are opened up for them. The shop is a place of exchange as well as the rediscovery and appreciation of food.
Awards
Even before the opening, Unverpackt received the special award from the GründerCup Kiel Region 2013. In 2016, the store received the Next Economy Award in the Social Entrepreneur category and the city of Kiel's environmental award. In 2018, company founder Marie Delaperrière was the winner of the Zeit-Wissen-Preis Courage for Sustainability.
