Uri Segal

Uri (Uriel) Segal ( Hebrew אורי סגל; * March 7, 1944 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli conductor .

Live and act

Segal studied violin and conducting at the former Rubinstein Academy of Music , which was renamed the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in 1965 . From 1966 to 1969 he attended the Guildhall School of Music . After graduating, he won first prize in the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Music Competition in New York City in 1969 , which was followed by an assistant position with Leonard Bernstein and George Szell at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . From 1972 to 1987 he was principal guest conductor at the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of the SWR .

From 1980 to 1982 Segal was chief conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and from 1981 to 1985 principal conductor of the Philharmonia Hungarica . At the same time he held the position of Artistic Director at the Israel Chamber Orchestra . In 1989, in the United States of America, he took over the position of music director of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in New York State , which he held until 2007. At the same time he also took over the post of chief conductor at the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra in Osaka (Japan) in 1989 , which he held until 1997. After leaving Osaka, he was honored with the title of Honorary Conductor of the Orchestra. Until 2004 he was music director of the Louisville Orchestra.

Segal has been married to Ilana Finkelstein since 1966 and is the father of three daughters and one son.
