Uromyces ehrhartae-calycinae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sweet grasses Ehrharta calycina and Ehrharta thunbergii . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. She is endemic to South Africa . Their secondary crop form is known under the name Uredo Ehrhartae-calycinae .
features
Macroscopic features
Uromyces ehrhartae-calycinae can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Uromyces ehrhartae-calycinae grows as with all Uredo TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The spermogonia and aecia of the species are not known. The uredia of the fungus growing on both sides of the host leaves are large and cinnamon brown. Their golden-brown uredospores are 22–27 × 19–21 (-26) µm in size, usually broadly ovate to broadly ellipsoidal and spiky. The parts of the species are unknown.
distribution
The known distribution area of Uromyces ehrhartae-calycinae only includes South Africa .
ecology
The host plant of Uromyces ehrhartae-calycinae is Ehrharta calycina , Ehrharta thunbergii and Ehrharta villosa . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a presumably macrocyclical development cycle with Spermogonia, Aecien, Uredien and Telien. Due to the lack of aecia and spermogonia, it is not possible to determine whether it changes host .
