The Urostylididae are a family of bugs (Heteroptera) within the suborder Pentatomomorpha . The name Urostylidae previously used for the family was due to a homonym with a same family of ciliates corrected in the grammatically correct urostylididae. After a comprehensive study of the Pentatomoidea from 2008 on the basis of morphological features and DNA sequences, it was shown that the group, which had long been regarded as the second subfamily of the Urostylididae, now belongs to the family as Saileriolidae .
features
The bugs are quite large and are significantly more than 5 and up to 14 millimeters in length. Many species look similar to the edge bugs (Coreidae). The antennae are usually long. The legs are just as long. The body is more elongated compared to other representatives of the Pentatomoidea . The trichobothria on the abdomen are located on the third to seventh sternum and are arranged in pairs and at an angle.
Occurrence
The distribution of the family includes the south and east of Asia and extends in the north to the east of the Palearctic and in the southwest to New Guinea .
Way of life
The way of life of the group is still unknown.
Taxonomy and systematics
The taxonomic position of the family was unclear for a long time. The group was counted among the sting bugs (Acanthosomatidae), the fire bugs (Pyrrhocoridae) and the stink bugs (Pentatomidae). After a comprehensive study of the Pentatomoidea from 2008 on the basis of morphological features and DNA sequences, it was shown that the group, which had long been regarded as the second subfamily of the Urostylididae, now belongs to the family as Saileriolidae . Thus, the family Urostylididae only includes the species that were formerly part of the subfamily Urostylinae. The group is the least developed group of the Pentatomoidea and has a sister group relationship to all other families .
The following genera are assigned to the family:
- Genus Parurochela
- Genus Tessaromerus
- Genus Urochela
- Genus Urostylis
