Urs Dietschi (born November 18, 1901 in Olten ; † July 29, 1982 in Solothurn ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

Life and political career

Dietschi grew up in Olten as the son of the mayor Hugo Dietschi . Family tradition and careful training laid the foundation for a humanistic attitude and cultural and social openness. He completed his law studies in Heidelberg, Berlin and Bern with a doctorate.

In 1929 Dietschi co-founded the Young Liberal Movement, a movement that wanted to renew liberalism in the spirit of the freedom-loving 19th century. From 1941 to 1945 he was their country chairman. He advocated the idea of a “new federation” that would unite the three estates of the bourgeoisie, workers and peasantry, but also the linguistic and cultural regions of Switzerland. Since 1933 the young liberal movement has called for a total revision of the federal constitution; In 1934, however, the competing "Tatgemeinschaft", a collection of frontists and the youth party of the Catholic Conservatives launched a popular initiative for a total revision (see Fronts Initiative ). This group represented corporate demands. The young liberal movement set itself apart from it; she called for greater consideration of the associations and an "economic council". Wife Emmy Dietschi says: “What was annoying for economic freedom was that the young liberals were not so absolutely business-friendly, much more socially minded.”… “Of course, Hermann Obrecht or Ernst Dübi didn't appreciate that at all… They would have loved to have the young liberals Not had. ”Von Roll and Employer Director Ernst Dübi on the other hand:“ Elasticity and elongation have become important characteristics ”. The historian Walter Wolf writes on this subject: "The young liberals at times believed that liberalism was outdated".

From December 6, 1943 to December 6, 1959 Dietschi was National Councilor for the Canton of Solothurn . Even after his election to the Solothurn government council in 1937, Dietschi remained loyal to the young liberals. He was their president during the war years.

After the war Dietschi switched to the mother party, the FDP , and politicized liberally. His social and cultural commitment and his differentiated politics were often not understood by the economically oriented wing of his party. He advocated the demand for women's suffrage at an early stage, with a soothing postulate from the National Council: "... I am for and against at the same time ... Burdens would also be placed on women, from which they could suffer as a sensitive being ..." He pleaded that Women are allowed to sit in extra-parliamentary commissions. In particular as President of the Federal Commission for Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection from 1952 to 1971, he successfully campaigned for issues relating to nature and heritage protection . As an enlightened Christian Catholic, he was committed to denominational tolerance; so he was involved in the restoration of the Mariastein monastery .

His estate was handed over to the Solothurn Central Library by his wife in the 1990s and completely cataloged by Ruedi Graf in the 00s. The estate is an important source for the history of the canton of Solothurn in the 20th century and the history of the young liberal movement.
