Urs Jenal (born December 31, 1961 in Alvaneu ) is a Swiss microbiologist and researches at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .

Life

Urs Jenal studied experimental biology at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate there in 1991. He then completed postdoctoral degrees at the ETH Zurich and Stanford University . Jenal has been researching and teaching at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel since 1996, initially as an assistant professor and since 2002 as a professor of molecular microbiology.

Act

Urs Jenal researches the molecular basis of signal transmission , which controls the growth , development and behavior of bacteria . Jenal attracted international attention for its discovery of a new signaling pathway based on a new cyclic di-nucleotide (c-di-GMP), which coordinates the formation of microbial biofilms and contributes to the development of chronic bacterial infections . Using the model bacterium Caulobacter crescentus , he discovered that c-di-GMP controls the transition from freely moving bacteria to the sedentary biofilm-forming form and coordinates this process with the reproduction cycle of the cells. Recent work examining the significance of c-di-GMP signaling network for chronic pulmonary infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients with cystic fibrosis (cystic fibrosis).
