Ursicinus of Ravenna is a saint of the Catholic Church and was Archbishop of Ravenna from 533 to 536 . His feast day is September 5th.

Ursicinus' predecessor was Archbishop Ecclesius of Ravenna (522-532). It is possible that Ursicinus did not follow him directly ( Sedis vacancy ). Ursicinus was mandans (legal client) for the Basilica Sant'Apollinare in Classe . This is evidenced by an inscription in the narthex of this church, which the church historian Agnellus of Ravenna narrates from the 9th century:

"B. Apolenaris Sacerdotis Basilica mandante Ursicino Episcopo a fundamentis Iulianus Argentarius aedificavit ornavit atque dedicavit consecrante Maximiano Episcopo. "

His tomb is in the Basilica of San Vitale , in the chapel of Nazarius and Celsus .

Representation in Sant'Apollinare in Classe

In the apse he is shown together with the bishops Severus, Ursus and Ecclesius. The bishops, all without aura are shown hanging between gathered Vela (curtains) tiaras . Ursicinus wears an alba (white dalmatic ), a planeta and a pallium as a badge of archbishopric dignity. On his feet he wears special calcei that were only worn by members of the upper class. In his left hand he holds the Holy Scriptures, which are depicted as a jeweled code of splendor. As was prescribed in the Byzantine court ceremonies to be handed to the emperor, he does not touch the codex directly, but covers his hand with the planet. The representations date from the 6th century and show portrait-like features of the Bishops Ecclesius and Ursicinus, who were nearby in time.
