Ursula Eggli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ursula Eggli (born November 16, 1944 in Dachsen ; † May 2, 2008 in Bern ) was a Swiss writer and activist of the disability movement .

Life

Ursula Eggli suffered from muscle atrophy and was therefore dependent on wheelchairs and similar aids from childhood.

In 1977 Eggli's first book was published with the title Herz im Korsett , which had an unexpected success throughout the German-speaking region (it was also published in a Polish translation in 2002). In the autobiographical diary, love and sexuality in disabled people - often viewed as asexual beings - were publicly discussed for the first time. Ursula Eggli spoke openly about her feelings and sensations as a woman who wanted to live her sexuality and who came up against narrow limits, thus providing impetus for discussion and rethinking in society. Heart in a corset is still seen by many as a milestone in the history of the disabled and women's movement . She published other books - most of them self-published - as well as numerous articles in magazines and anthologies . However, she could not build on the success of her first book.

Ursula Eggli was very active within the disability movement: for example, she took part in demonstrations, gave lectures, gave courses or wrote articles for magazines for the disabled. With Puls she founded her own “newspaper by and for the disabled and non-disabled”.

In addition, Eggli discovered her lesbian inclination and subsequently became involved in the lesbian and gay movement . The multiple award-winning documentary Disabled Love (shown for the first time at the Solothurn Film Festival in 1979), in which Eggli played a major role, had the sexuality of disabled people as its theme.

Award

1985 Eggli was awarded the Prize of the city of Bern.
