Ursula Laquay-Him
Ursula Laquay-Ihm (born March 12, 1932 in Karlsruhe ) is a German painter and object artist .
Life
Ursula Laquay-Ihm was born on March 12, 1932 in Karlsruhe as the daughter of the architect, painter and draftsman Ludwig Ihm (1900–1973) and of Gertrud Ihm b. Wahl (1901–1990). The family lived in Speyer (Karlsruhe is the place of birth). Ursula Laquay-Him has three sisters and one brother.
Ursula Laquay-Ihm attended grammar school in Speyer, which she graduated from high school in 1950, and then completed internships in carpentry, ceramics and textile design, which led her to the fine arts. From 1952 to 1956 she studied interior design and building construction at the Stuttgart Art Academy under the tutors Hugo Peters (artistic design), Herta-Maria Witzemann (interior design), Herbert Hirche (building construction), Peter Otto Heim (ceramics), Kurt Wehlte (color theory) and Lily Hildebrandt (fabric print). She then worked as a furniture designer in the furniture industry until 1957 and then established herself as a freelance painter in Stuttgart and Bietigheim . During this time, there were two longer periods of work in the USA and France.
In 1962 she married Heinz Laquay (* 1927), a graduate engineer . The couple lived in Stuttgart until 1964, then in Koblenz and from 1973 until today again in Stuttgart. In 1967 the son Justus Laquay was born, who lives and works as a freelance artist and designer in Berlin.
Works (selection)
After the birth of her son in 1967, Ursula Laquay-Ihm underwent a change in consciousness. She noticed how threatened and fragile our environment is, and how important it is to preserve this world for future generations. She brings "a repertoire of technical forms in her colorful painting into imaginative constellations". From the eighties onwards, she also implemented her ideas in object images and installations, in which she subjects technical remains and packaging waste from civilization to "recycling".
“Her interest,” says art historian Sabine Leutheußer-Holz (1955–2012), “is in the living spaces that humans create - and that interests them even more, those that they deface. The land consumption that industrial society affords itself, the destruction of natural resources, the wasteful use of raw materials, the throw-away mentality - all of this makes the artist look to the future with concern ”.

City drawings
Ursula Laquay-Ihm describes a group of drawings as “city drawings”. Sabine Leutheußer-Holz characterized this series of works on the occasion of the award of the Sabine Hoffmann Art Prize to Ursula Laquay-Ihm as follows:
“The starting point for this group of large-format, colored works are city maps. Ursula Laquay-Ihm studies it with the question: How much land does the country have - what for? It creates representation zones and industrial zones; But does it also address people's need for zones of survival, for spaces of illusion? Attracted by the optical diversity to which the information in such a plan condenses, the artist tries to recognize the order systems behind the structures, to find models of coexistence. In order to understand better, she draws the plans. In this way, she intuitively experiences the underlying patterns. She develops a feeling for urban planning situations, for complicated conditions, ingenious solutions and exhausted possibilities. These drawings are the result of strict abstraction processes. "
Note: After the work title, if available, there is a fictitious place name from the book The Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino (1972) in brackets . They point to a quote that Ursula-Laquay-Ihm selected as the motto for the respective city drawing.

Cosmic Architectures
The series of works Cosmic Architectures presents drawings and collages which, as “future prognoses” (Ursula Laquay-Ihm), provide insights into future worlds. Ursula Laquay-Ihm created the cycle between 1991 and 2004. The partially collaged drawings in A4 format were drawn on paper with colored pencil and tempera. Some of the drawings are owned by the artist, and in 2004 she gave 20 drawings to the Galerie Stihl Waiblingen on permanent loan. The single sheets can be combined to a picture wall with 15 to 20 sheets as shown in the picture.
