Urve Palo (born July 10, 1972 in Haapsalu ) is an Estonian politician. She was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) and was a minister in various departments from 2007 to 2018 . She was a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE) from 2006 to 2018 .

Life

Urve Palo graduated from high school in Värska in 1990 . She studied at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tartu until 1994 . In 1993 she worked for the Estonian construction company Saint-Gobain Ehitustooted Eesti AS , which she took over in 1999.

politics

Urve Palo joined the SDE in 2006. From April 2007 to May 2009 she was Minister of Population ( Estonian Rahvastikuminister ) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip . Its main tasks included the integration of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia and the stable demographic development of Estonian society.

In the parliamentary elections in Estonia in 2011 , Palo won the Estonian parliament with 5875 votes. From March 2014 to April 2015 she was Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure in the social-liberal coalition government under Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas .

In the 2015 parliamentary elections , Urve Palo managed to defend her parliamentary seat with 2028 votes. From April 9 to September 14, 2015, Palo served as Minister for Foreign Trade and Entrepreneurship of the Republic of Estonia in the government of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas. In September 2015, she left the cabinet as part of a government reshuffle. Since November 23, 2016, she has been in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jüri Ratas, Minister for Entrepreneurship and Information Technology of the Republic of Estonia. On July 23, 2018, Palo announced after an internal party dispute that she would be giving up her ministerial post and ending her membership of the SDE. Until the next elections , in which she did not run again, she kept her mandate as a non-party, as she had planned.
