Uta Gerhardt

Uta Gerhardt (born June 11, 1938 in Zella-Mehlis / Thuringia) is a German sociologist . She is a professor emeritus at Heidelberg University .

Career

Uta Gerhardt studied sociology, philosophy and history in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin and received her doctorate in 1969 in Constance. Her habilitation thesis “ Role Analysis as Critical Sociology” made an important contribution to the discussion of roles in the 1960s by dealing with the topic of social roles .

In Constance, she began teaching as an academic adviser . In the summer semester of 1973 she took over a professorship for Friedrich Tenbruck at the University of Tübingen . After several years of research in Great Britain , Uta Gerhardt became Professor of Medical Sociology in the Faculty of Human Medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen in 1979 .

Her studies on Talcott Parsons are important in general sociology, her work on the patient careers of chronically ill patients in medical sociology and life course research, and her methodological work on type formation for empirical social research , which makes Max Weber's concept of the ideal type useful for qualitative social research .

After a visiting professorship in the USA at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , she became professor of sociology at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg in 1993. She has been retired since 2003.

Uta Gerhardt was a member of the board of the German Society for Sociology from 1980 to 1984 and first chairwoman of the German Society for Medical Sociology from 1980 to 1983 .
