Friedrich Tenbruck

Friedrich H. Tenbruck (born September 22, 1919 in Essen , † February 9, 1994 in Tübingen ) was a German sociologist .

life and work

Tenbruck studied philosophy, history and German at the University of Freiburg , especially with Martin Heidegger and, after turning away from Heideggerianism, at the universities in Berlin, Cologne, Greifswald and Marburg. At the University of Marburg , he was in 1944 with a thesis on Kant's " Critique of Pure Reason " in Philosophy at Julius Ebbinghaus Dr. phil. PhD. In Marburg he lived in Max Kommerell's house . From 1946 to 1949 he worked as a research assistant at the Philosophical Seminar at Marburg University. In the 1950s he switched from philosophy to sociology and, after studying in the USA in 1951/51, became personal assistant to Max Horkheimer in Frankfurt am Main for a few months . From 1957 to 1962 Tenbruck taught as an assistant professor at the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva ( New York ). After returning to Germany , he completed his habilitation in 1962 at the University of Freiburg under Arnold Bergstraesser with a thesis on history and society . In 1963 Tenbruck became full professor of sociology at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Frankfurt am Main and in 1967 (as successor to Ralf Dahrendorf ) professor at the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Tübingen . Tenbruck has the Cultural Sociology revived and the section "sociology of culture" of the German Sociological Association co-founded. After 1968 he was one of the sharpest scientific critics of the more recent developments in sociology, especially in the Marxist version, but also of the structural functionalism that dominated in the 1960s .

His students include Alois Hahn and Gottfried Küenzlen .
